" Awake, O north wind, and come O south! Blow upon my garden, that its spices may flow out. Let my beloved come to his garden and eat its pleasant fruits. "- Song of Songs 4: 16
The words, the message are important and...lovely. It is beautiful poetry. Poetry that has to do with everyday reality.
The message in this verse is like a pure flowing stream rushing into the spirit. It is a quickening, exciting command!
Awake! Awake, O north wind! Come O south! Blow upon my garden!
Do you feel the passion of the one who speaks this? Can you sense the throbbing desire to let the spices flow out?
It can be difficult to describe what happens sometimes when reading or hearing the Word. You've read it before, heard it before...but this time, this time you really hear it. This time something goes 'click' inside you. This time the Holy Spirit is giving it to you and you receive it. It goes not only to your head but pierces the division of soul and spirit as a sword.
Imagine a beautiful, colorful garden full of summer spices in Israel.
" ....the aloe was a bitter spice, and it tells of the sweetness of bitter things, the bitter-sweet, which has its own fine application that only those can understand who have felt it." Aloe Vera is a bitter herb famed for its healing power.
And there is myrrh in this garden, causing a surpassingly sweet, alluring aroma to fill the air.
" The frankincense was a fragrance that came from the touch of the fire. It was a burning powder that rose in clouds of sweetness from the bosom of the flames. It tells of the heart whose sweetness has been called forth..."
All these powerful spices are contained in this garden. The Shulumite woman, the Bride, begs the winds to come and blow upon her garden and cause all the spices to flow out upon the land. To carry the perfumes, the healing, the fire out of the garden all over the area. To have all these spices flow out...Awake, O North Wind! Blow O South! Awake and Blow Upon my garden!
We are a garden planted by the Lord. He has put seeds in our soil by His hands, He has nurtured and cultivated us by His Holy Spirit and Word. There are spices in our garden, sweet and bitter, for healing and for sweet smelling sacrifices. There are talents, gifts, and callings within us that are ready to be carried out of the garden and into the kingdom of God so they be used for His glory! We need the wind of the Spirit to blow upon our gardens and cause the spices to flow out!
When I meditate on this verse something in me is stirred up, something deep within my heart joins with this woman's cry and shouts, Awake Wind and Blow! Do you feel it? That cry in your soul to le the aloe, the myrrh and frankincense fly through the air and minister to the land? Blow on our gardens, Lord, that the spices may flow out. That You may come to Your garden and eat its pleasant fruit. Let my Beloved Come.
